Trip Overview of Upper Mustang Overland Tour – 8 Days

The Upper Mustang Overland Tour – 8 Days  in the Upper Mustang region of Nepal is often cited as the hidden gem, particularly the ancient Kingdom of Lo Manthang. This walled settlement is nothing like the other regions of Nepal. Until 1992, this region was sealed off to international visitors in order to maintain and preserve the culture of the region. At present, the region is still restricted, but a certain number of visitors are allowed every year.

The dramatic culture and expansive scenes en route, featuring the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountain ranges, will surely get you hooked. Founded in 1380 AD by Ame Pal, the Kingdom of Lo Manthang was a crucial stop en route to the salt trade route between India and Tibet. This ancient kingdom lasted for 4 centuries before it was made a part of Nepal. The last king of Lo Manthang took his last breath in 2016.

Given the arid terrain and chilly weather, the population there is very sparse. As per the last census, the Mustang region had a total population of about 15000, including the lower and upper regions. The dominant inhabitants of the Mustang region are the Thakali and Gurung people. Their dialect can be a little different from the Gurungs and Thakali of other regions, as they closely follow Tibetan Buddhism and its teachings. Regardless of the difference, the people of the mountains are always welcoming and helpful to visitors.

Passing by villages like Kagbeni, Ghami, Tsarang, Chele, and more, you will get to witness authentic countryside life in Nepal. You might even get to see nightly cultural performances, showcasing traditional music, instruments, dance, and attire. Likewise, there are many things that we think you should know before you start the trek. So, here’s a detailed breakdown of the experience that you are going to get on this amazing highland tour to the restricted Upper Mustang region.

Both of these arrangements are done on a twin-sharing basis, which can also be upgraded to private rooms at a price. The cost of this will be accounted for separately as well.

How does our trip start?

The Upper Mustang Overland Tour – 8 Days starts with your arrival in Nepal. As your flight touches down at the Tribhuvan International Airport, one of our reps will be waiting for you at the terminal. After you get your tourist visa, you will head out of the terminal and meet our representative there. He will greet you and take you to catch your flight to Pokhara. This is the start of the tour.

Best seasons

The best seasons for experiencing the Upper Mustang Overland Tour – 8 Days are spring and autumn. In theory, you can do this at any time during the year, since the region is not greatly affected by seasonal traits such as rain and heat. However, spring and autumn generally offer the best scenes as the quality of air is at its peak and there are very minimal chances of clouds blocking your views.

Spring and autumn are also festive periods in Nepal; you might get to experience a celebration or two during your time in Nepal. Another great option is the season of summer, the views are equally great, but it can get a bit too warm in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Altitude Sickness

The Syangboche Pass or Yamada La Pass is the highest point of the Upper Mustang Overland Tour reaching 4200 meters above sea level. This is undoubtedly a considerably high altitude, but we will not be spending any nights above 4000 meters of elevation. Our highest sleeping elevation is 3840 meters at Lo Manthang, which is considerably safe from altitude sickness. Even if you were to induce the illness, the effects it has on you, at that elevation, are very trivial. Safe to say, the chances of you getting altitude sick are very low.

Accommodation, Food and Drink

All the standard accommodation we arrange for you on this Upper Mustang Overland Tour – 8 Days  is supposed to be shared by two people in the group. You will be sharing the room with one of the travelers in the group, or we can arrange single rooms at a price. All the accommodation expenses will be covered by the Upper Mustang Overland Tour package; however, extra expenses like laundry, bar bill, etc., will not be covered.

During your time in city areas, the package will cover only morning breakfasts; your lunch and dinner expenses are not included. The package will provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day during the time in the Mustang region.

Transportation

Your flights to and from Jomsom, drive to and from Pokhara, and other minor ground transportation required by the Upper Mustang Overland Tour itinerary will be covered by the package. Any extra transportation expenses will be added to the final bill.

Permit

To enter the restricted region of the Upper Mustang, you need to have an Annapurna Conservation Area permit and an Upper Mustang Restricted Area permit. Both of these permits are a part of the Upper Mustang Overland Tour package.

Cost & Budget

Our Upper Mustang Overland Tour – 8 Days package is reasonably priced at USD 1700$ per head. At this price range, your daily accommodation expenses will be covered along with other expenses, including all the aforementioned transportation, local taxes, permit fees, daily wages of the tour guide and driver, and more.

Throughout the Upper Mustang Overland Tour, you will have access to WiFi connections and mobile network connections. However, at sites like the top of passes and some other remote parts, you might have no access to any of them. But you need not worry, you will get to connect to the internet every night. Also, charging your devices should not be an issue at all.

  • Dust masks, weatherproof jackets, sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, etc., are needed for this tour.

Frequently Asked Question (FAQ’s)

Yes, the road from Jomsom to Lo Manthang is accessible year-round. However, during the winter months, the roads can get a bit slippery due to snow and ice. Many travelers still visit the Upper Mustang region in the winter season to experience snowfall and different perspectives of the highlands. Glory Adventure’s tour experts recommend not doing this tour in winter as the scenes can be blocked by clouds, and it’s extremely cold as well.

Yes, there are river crossings on the drive, but they are rarely affected by the monsoon. One of the main things about this trek is the rugged trails that offer a great off-road experience, barely affected by seasonal traits. The Upper Mustang region is located in the rain shadow of the Annapurna Himalayan range, making it one of the least rainfall-affected regions in the whole of Nepal. This is exactly why the entire region is dry and arid.

Yes, we will have plenty of time to visit many ancient monasteries along the way, including Thubchen and Jampa Lhakhang in Lo Manthang. In addition to those, we will also visit the Chode monastery, Nyamgyal monastery, Tasarang gompa, and more. Make sure that you dress modestly while visiting any religious sites on this tour. Also, do not disturb any of the ongoing activities or the monks who are in meditation or simply at the gompa.

No, you are allowed to enter the walled city of Lo Manthang at any given time of the day; there are no restrictions on time. However, entering Lo Manthang before dawn is generally the best approach, as you might get lost trying to find your accommodation in the dark. This is one of the reasons you should have a guide on this tour.

There are certain restrictions on photography at some monasteries. While you are free to snap pictures of religious sites from the outside, most monasteries do not allow photographing the insides of the building. Villages do not have such restrictions; however, make sure to get the permission of the locals if you are planning on taking their pictures.

The Tiji festival usually takes place in December, which is winter in Nepal. Unless you are planning to do this tour in the winter season, we can not include the Tiji festival in the itinerary. You do not need any kind of tickets or extra fees to attend the festival; it is free to watch and celebrate, although donations are appreciated. Since winter is not particularly a great season for highland tours, you can also get some discounts on the tour package at the same time.

While Nepal Dal Bhat is very common in Upper Mustang, you can also get authentic Thakali-style lunch and dinner sets that are famous all over Nepal. Some Gurung villages en route offer authentic traditional meals, which we recommend travelers try at least once. Tasting new and local dishes is a part of visiting any new place and also a way to experience their culture and daily lives.

Yes, there is a risk of altitude sickness in Lo Manthang, even if we’re traveling by vehicle, but the risk is very low. The chances of you getting altitude sickness are very low since the elevation is not that high, and the effects it has on the human body at such a low elevation are very minimal. Altitude sickness does not care if we travel on foot or on a vehicle; if you do not follow the preventive measures, you will get hit.

Accommodation throughout your time in the Mustang region is basic local lodges and inns. These establishments offer just the basic services, with some extra facilities like laundry, WiFi, hot showers, and more. Do not expect them to be fancy in any way; getting even the most basic facilities in the barely accessible regions is a luxury.

No, there are no attached bathrooms in most guesthouses; it is just not a thing in the highland lodges. You will mostly get communal washrooms with hot showers on demand.

There are a couple of mechanical repair points every day on the trails, but there are only a couple of fuel stations throughout the tour. The driver will manage the fuel requirements and also do minor repairs on his own. We will inspect the vehicle fully before sending it on a tour, so you can rest assured that there will be no major issues out of the blue.

While there are a couple of ATMs in Jomsom and some private banks, there are no dedicated foreign currency exchange services. So, we recommend getting all the cash you need in Pokhara or Kathmandu.

As per the experience of our tour guides and travelers, we have sent to Upper Mustang. NTC SIM cards work better in comparison to Ncell.

No, power cuts are not common in Upper Mustang. However, if you want to charge your devices while riding in the jeep, a power bank is a must.

Yes, the Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit is included in the package cost, along with the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit.
