Trip Overview of Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek

The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is one of the best off-the-beaten-path Himalayan trekking destinations. This trek combines the remote and secluded Tsum Valley and the alpine Manaslu region. Before 2008, this trek was not a possibility for foreigners, making it one of the most recently opened trekking destinations in the Himalayas. Starting from the foothills of the sub-tropical region, you will traverse through a diverse range of vegetation and climatic zones throughout the trek.

Mt. Manaslu, Himalchuli, Annapurna II, Himlung Himal, Baudha Himal, Ganesh Himal VI, Sringi Himal, etc., are some of the peaks you will get to see on this trek. The panoramic and picturesque scenes of these great mountains will surely enhance the overall trekking experience. In addition to this, you will also get to visit a couple of monasteries en route.

The Tibetan-Buddhist architecture is one of the most prominent architectural styles in the region, and the monasteries showcase it perfectly. Monasteries such as Mu Gompa, Rachen Gompa, and Pungen Gompa are on our Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek itinerary. Not only are these visits aesthetically pleasing, but you will also sense a bit of spirituality. The serene landscape, paired with the sacred chants of the monks, fill the air with some kind of divine aura.

Home to over a hundred species of birds and animals, the Manalsu region also houses deep river gorges, glaciers, icefalls, and glacial moraines. We will have to cross many suspension bridges and a couple of mountain passes, making the trek a bit more challenging and exciting at the same time. Notably, we will cross the Larkya La pass, reaching 5106 meters above sea level, the highest altitude you will reach on this Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek.

Here’s a detailed explanation of our trek package, so you fully understand what you are getting into. We recommend going through this article before you decide to do this trek.

Essential Information of Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek

Add-Ons

Arrange Accommodation in Kathmandu or Pokhara

Normally, the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek package does not cover or arrange accommodation during your time in cities. However, we can arrange your stay in the city before and after the trek, if you would like the convenience. This will be accounted for separately.

How does our trip start?

Our trip begins with a drive to Machha Khola from Kathmandu. The drive to the starting point of the trek is long, with a mix of smooth and bumpy sections. After riding for about 9 hours, we will reach our destination and rest for the night. The next morning, we will start the trekking days.

Difficulty

The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek is a moderately difficult destination that features many ascents and descents. On a scale of 10, we have given it 7.5. The steep inclines and declines, and the high altitude of the trek make the trek difficult.

Best seasons

Like most other trekking destinations in Nepal, the best seasons are generally considered to be autumn and spring. The autumn season offers a range of great traits that make our trekking days successful. During fall, we will experience peak visibility in the air, overall dry trails, and clear skies with great landscape views. Autumn is also usually chosen for its lack of rainfall or very minimal rainfall.

On the other side, spring is the most lush period of the entire year. You will experience different flowering plants, notably wild flowers and Rhododendrons, en route. Spring is similar to autumn in most ways, but it does rain a little more in comparison (still not as much as summer).

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is a possibility on this Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek, but the chances are pretty low as Glory Adventure’s guide will teach you the preventive measures. He will also keep an eye on your oxygen levels to look for early signs of altitude sickness. In case of an emergency, we will contact the evacuation services.

Accommodation, Food and Drink

Tea houses are the main accommodation during this trek, followed by lodges and inns. While some of the villages offer homestay experiences, they are not the best option. When it comes to food options, it’s typically a mix between local, traditional, and Western dishes. While food and accommodation are covered by the trek package, drinks are not a part of it.

Transportation

Every land transportation required by the itinerary will be covered by the trek package. We also offer free airport pickups and drop-offs.

Permit

Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, Manaslu Conservation Area Permit, Tsum Valley Restricted Area Permit, and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit are the permits needed for this trek. All of the permit fees are a part of the package.

Cost & Budget

Our Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek package is priced at USD _______ per person. This package covers daily accommodation, daily wages of the porters and guide, daily meals, permit fees, local taxes, transportation expenses, insurance of the crew members, and more.

Gadgets charging & Internet

Charging your gadgets could be an issue during your time in Tsum Valley, as it is very secluded and does not offer great infrastructure services. The rest of the destinations on the trek will have no issues with charging gadgets. However, for the most part, you will not have internet connections. There is no Wi-Fi in remote villages, and you will not be getting any cellular network as well. So, be prepared to spend a few days without any internet.

Your Extra expenses

Things like travel and medical insurance, additional meals, tips for the crew members, extra night stays, emergency evacuation services, any kind of drinks, and anything not mentioned to be inclusive are your extra expenses.

Things to Remember Before Trekking The Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek

  • Make sure that you prepare well for this trek since the ascents can break you down if you are underprepared.
  • Do not challenge the pace of the guide; always follow the pace he has set.
  • -10°C sleeping bags are necessary for spending nights in highland villages such as Dharamshala and Samdo.
  • The descent from Larkya La Pass is usually longer than what people expect; be prepared to trek for over 8 hours.
  • Mobile network connectivity and the internet are not available at most of the villages, so download your favorite albums and videos if you need to.

Frequently Asked Question (FAQ’s)

While health posts in both regions are limited, emergency evacuation services can reach any part of the itinerary. There are basic health posts in most of the villages, but their equipment and medications are limited as well. For emergency medical assistance, the only viable option is a helicopter rescue to the nearest hospital.

Yes, boiled and filtered water is available at every village on the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek. However, during trekking, you might have to refill your bottle with tap water. In such instances, we recommend using water purification tablets. You should not take any risks when it comes to food and water contamination.

During the spring season, crampons or microspikes are not particularly necessary, but if they help you trek, you are free to wear them. However, during the late autumn period, snowfall can be expected as winter is slowly closing in. So, we recommend bringing crampons and microspikes, just in case the trail is icy and snowy.

Yes, it is possible to do so. First, we will take you to Pokhara after the end of the trek, and bring you back to Kathmandu. This service will cost you extra.

You do not have to arrange any emergency services; Glory Adventure’s trek guides will help you in case of emergencies. They will contact the relevant services via a satellite phone.

While most of the lower region villages have private rooms, the highlands settlements do not offer the same service. However, there are a few tea houses that have private rooms, but they are hard to find and usually booked weeks and months in advance.

Warm blankets are provided in every tea house and lodge we will stay at, but they might not be enough to block the harsh cold of the Himalayas, especially at considerable elevations. So, we recommend bringing along a warm sleeping bag to keep you safe from the cold.

Hot showers are available at the lower region, while you have to go a couple of days without a shower or rely on sponge baths in the higher settlements. You will be charged a couple of bucks for a hot shower since even the most basic needs are hard to come by in the remote Himalayas.

In the Tsum valley region, mobile networks are basically non-existent, while the Manaslu region offers some level of connectivity at certain places. Wi-Fi coverage is not an option in the remote Himalayas; however, some places do have internet connection (very slow and unreliable).

Yes, the rest days at Nile and Samdo are enough for proper acclimatization. We will follow all the necessary preventive measures of altitude sickness as well, keeping us away from the illness.

Yes, trekking poles are necessary for the descent from Larkya La pass as the trail is long and rugged. If you do not use trekking poles for support, your knees will give out by the time we reach our destination of the day. In addition, trekking poles are also handy for other descents and ascents over the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek itinerary.

Yes, gaiters or waterproof boots are necessary for this trek since we might have to trek over snowy and icy slopes, in chilling cold weather. Having a waterproof boot will keep your feet dry throughout the day; wet and tired feet are not a good combination, especially in the Himalayas.

Yes, visitors are welcome to visit the gompa en route, but you have to be respectful of their beliefs and practices. Do not make any unnecessary noise and always dress modestly; showing skin is not entertained.

Yes, all of the gompa in the region run on donations, whether it’s monetary, labor, food, or something else. We encourage visitors to donate, as the proceeds are directed towards running the gompa and maintaining its beauty.

Tea houses do not necessarily require you to open your shoes while it is mandatory to remove them if you are entering a gompa.
