How does our trip start?
The Khopra Ridge Trek starts with a tourist bus ride to Pokhara. This ride along the Prithvi highway is a long one, as we will cover 200 km in 8 hours to reach our destination. We will spend the night in Pokhara as we will not have enough time to trek to Ulleri village. The next day, we will have a scenic breakfast by the Fewa Lake and get on our ride to Nayapul, the starting point of this trek. After reaching Nayapul, we will start our first day of trekking with a short trek to the village of Ulleri.
Difficulty
This Khopra Ridge Trek is graded as a moderate trek with a couple of difficult sections that are very manageable. According to Glory Adventure’s guides, this trek is among the easiest trek of the Annapurna region; not as easy as the standard Ghorepani Poon hill but on the same level as the standard Mardi Himal Trek. On a scale of 10, our guides and trek experts have given it a 6, just because it has the infamous 3000 steps. If it were not for the stone stairs, the rating would be 5, or maybe even 4.5.
Best seasons
The Khopra Ridge Trek is best done in the season of spring. During the spring season, the Annapurna highlands enter a new phase of the natural cycle, the trees grow new leaves, flowers, and the animals become more active. This offers a great trekking experience as we make our way through forested paths and charming villages. In addition to that, the visibility is great, and the weather remains clear for the most part.
Your other option is the autumn season. This season offers the best trekking conditions with very minimal chances of rain, best visibility, and great clear blue skies. The autumn season is mainly chosen for its dry characteristic since it receives little to no rain. Dry periods mean that the trails will not be slippery.
Altitude Sickness
One of the best things about this Khopra Ridge Trek is the safety from altitude sickness. The highest point of this trek is 4460 meters at Khayer Lake, which is a considerable elevation, but it is also safe from the grave effects of altitude sickness. At this level, even if you were to get altitude sickness, the effects would be very minimal, and you could just get rid of it by walking down a couple of hundred meters or taking a tablet.
The real deal starts after you reach over 5000 meters, which this trek does not. So, it is pretty safe from altitude sickness. However, to avoid the inconvenience of slight headaches and nausea caused by lower-level altitude sickness, we recommend you stay well-hydrated all the way from day 4 to the end of trekking days.
Accommodation, Food and Drink
Accommodations during your stay in Kathmandu and Pokhara will be in 3-star hotels as per the standard Khopra Ridge Trek package offers. You can upgrade it to 4-star or 5-star accommodations as per your preference, at a cost. However, upgrading accommodation is not a possibility during the trekking days. The standard hotels and tea houses we book for you operate on a twin-sharing basis. This means that two tekkers in a group will share a single room with two separate beds.
If you want a whole room to yourself, you should let us know your preferred accommodation setting at the booking phase. The trek package only covers the standard accommodation expenses; your hot shower fees, WiFi fees, and more will not be covered.
One of the best things about this trek is the different food options you get throughout the journey. The Gurung village offers traditional Gurung dishes along with common Nepalese dishes and some international dishes. Likewise, the Magar communities offer the same things, except it’s Magar dishes instead of Gurung. However, the options for drinks remain the same: seasonal fruit juice at major villages, hot tea and coffee, cold drinks, canned juice, etc.
Transportation
Bus rides to and from Kathmandu, jeep or car rides to and from Pokhara at the end and the beginning of the trekking days, and pick up and drop off from the international airport in Kathmandu, are the only transportation costs that the Khopra Ridge Trek package will cover.
Permit
You are legally required to have the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit to roam the protected Annapurna region and complete this trek. This permit is obtainable from the Tourism Board offices in Pokhara and Kathmandu, and the expense related to it will be covered by the Khopra Ridge Trek package.
Trip preparation and fitness
We expect trekkers to have an average physicality level since this trek requires 4 to 5 hours of trekking daily, which can be very taxing for someone who is overweight or unprepared for the trek. The best way to prepare for the Khopra Ridge Trek is to go on short hikes or long walks. You can also train your legs at the gym, engage in cardio exercises, or just run on the treadmill.
Cost & Budget
The cost of Glory Adventure’s Khopra Ridge Trek package is USD 850 . This package will handle your daily meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) during the trekking days, daily accommodation expenses, daily wages for the porters, guides, and drivers, permit fees, local taxes in the Annapurna highlands, oxygen measuring device, seasonal fruit bowl every night, first aid box, and more.
Gadgets charging & Internet
Charging your gadgets might be an issue after we leave Ghorepani village, since the upcoming villages are very remote and neglected. Most of the villages do not get a proper hydroelectricity connection, so they have to rely on solar power to light their houses. You will be able to charge your devices, but you might be charged a couple of bucks as service fees. This will not be covered by the Khopra Ridge Trek package.
For most of the trek, you should not expect to have a reliable fast internet connection since we will be traversing remote highlands where even cellular connections are not available.
Your Extra expenses
Any meals during your stay in Kathmandu, hot shower fees, WiFi fees, laundry fees, personal travel insurance fees, any kind of flight expenses, medical insurance fees, emergency evacuation expenses, tips for the crew members, and anything that is not mentioned as a part of the Khopra Ridge Trek package are your extra expenses.
Things to Remember Before Trekking Khopra Ridge Trek
- Carry a bunch of water purification tablets, as you will need them every time you refill your bottle. Also, carry a reusable water bottle.
- Get ready to spend weeks without a proper internet connection.
- The weather in the highlands can change in an instant; it is very unpredictable, so we recommend you pack weatherproof clothes.
- After we cross Dobato, the trails get very secluded, you might not even see a single human for hours.
- Food options are limited to the seasonal veggies that are locally grown. Also, do not eat meat for the entirety of the trek since proper refrigeration is not practiced there.
Add-Ons
Upgrade Your Accommodation in Kathmandu and Pokhara
A bit of luxury has never harmed anyone, especially if you are going on a rugged trekking journey that sees no more than a couple of thousand trekkers in a year. You can choose from the 4-star or 5-star options available throughout the city since our standard option is a 3-star hotel stay. We will play no part in selecting your upgraded hotel unless you want us to recommend some good ones. You will be charged extra for this service as it is not a part of the standard Khopra Ridge Trek package.
Flight to and from Pokhara
Travelling to Pokhara is essential for this Khopra Ridge Trek since it connects us to the starting point of the trek. However, a bus ride to Pokhara from Kathmandu takes about 8 hours to complete, which might be completely intolerable for some, which is why we also have the option of a flight. This upgrade will be charged separately.
Compared to an 8-hour bus ride, a flight to Pokhara only lasts 25 minutes, which saves you many hours that you can spend exploring the beautiful attractions of Pokhara.
