Trip Overview of Gokyo Lakes Trek 12 Days

The Gokyo region is one of the most visited Himalayan trekking destinations in Nepal and offers a great deal of beautiful natural scenery. This region lies within the Khumbu region in the northeastern part of the country, taking us through the Everest National Park. This itinerary follows the standard Everest Base Camp trek itinerary for the most part and offers an off-the-beaten-path experience as we depart from it. You can also see it as an alternative to the popular Everest Base Camp trek.

The Gokyo Lakes are the major water sources in the region and consist of 6 different lakes, the world’s highest freshwater lake system. All of those lakes are considered sacred by followers of Buddhism and Hinduism, which is one of the reasons for their pristine conditions. The turquoise blue water of those lakes is protected by the local communities and the state government.

The main climax of this Gokyo Lakes Trek 12 Days adventure is reaching the summit of Gokyo Ri, a great viewpoint offering a wide 360-degree view of the Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, and Mount Everest peaks. All of these peaks are among the top 10 highest mountains in the world. You will also get to see a great portion of the Ngozump Glacier, also known as Khumbu glacier, the largest of its kind in Nepal.

If you are someone who is into Himalayan trekking, you might have already heard about the Sherpa people who thrive in the cold climate of the Himalayas. Throughout the trekking days, we will be staying at Sherpa and Tamang villages every night and experience the daily lives of these humble and strong people. You might also get to experience some of their cultural performances and celebrations.

One of the best things about the Gokyo Lakes Trek 12 Days is the option of route modification. For instance, if you want to increase the difficulty of this trek, you can simply add the standard Everest Base Camp trek itinerary, making it a 3 to 4-week-long adventure. Regardless of how you want to enjoy this trek, we should practice sustainable trekking habits to make sure that the next trekkers and mountaineers enjoy nature as much as you did.

Route Map & Altitude Chart

Essential Information of Gokyo Lakes Trek 12 Days

How does our trip start?

The Gokyo Lakes Trek 12 Days starts with your arrival in Kathmandu, which will count as the first day of the trek. The next day, we will get you out of the city with a flight to Lukla. This is where our trek will start. From Lukla, we will trek 7.5 km to get to Phakding, where we will spend the night.

Difficulty

Our Gokyo Lakes Trek 12 Days itinerary is a moderately difficult trekking journey. For the most part, you will enjoy very manageable trekking trails, but there are a few ascents that are difficult and long. Other than that, this trek is very doable, even by beginners. However, we do not recommend that beginners join this trek as it can turn into an unenjoyable journey if you are not well-prepared and inexperienced. Our Glory Adventure trek experts have rated this trek a solid 7 out of 10.

The high altitudes we will reach on this trek are also a part of the difficult aspects. High altitude means that you will experience less oxygen in the air, which in turn makes you more easily exhausted.

Best seasons

The best seasons for the Gokyo Lakes Trek 12 Days are spring and autumn. Spring in Nepal starts from March and ends in May; during this time, the beautiful Rhododendron flowers bloom fully. This adds a touch of red and pink color to the greenery of the hills and whiteness of the peaks. The air is fresh since Mother Nature produces new plants, leaves, and animals become active as well, increasing your chances of encountering one in the wild.

Autumn comes after monsoon, which clears away any smog in the air, offering great visibility in the air. The skies are generally clear throughout this season since it receives very little rainfall, meaning no clouds are going to block your views. The daytime temperature stays very mild throughout the season, and it is also the festive period in Nepal. You will get to see a couple of public celebrations of major festivals in Kathmandu.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness starts from 3500 meters and above, but up until you reach 5000 meters of elevation, the effects of this illness are very minimal. We will be spending the majority of our trekking days at over 4000 meters of elevation, which implies that we are safe from the grave effects of altitude sickness.

Our highest point of the trek is 5357 meters above sea level at the summit of Gokyo Ri. This is a considerable elevation, but we will be spending no more than an hour there, so it is safe. In addition to that, we will follow all the preventive measures for altitude sickness.

Accommodation, Food and Drink

The standard accommodation that our Gokyo Lakes Trek 12 Days package covers is local tea houses during the trekking days and 3-star hotels in Kathmandu. Both of those arrangements are on a twin-sharing basis, which translates to 2 trekkers sharing the same room, with 2 different beds. If you would like to, we can arrange a private stay throughout the journey, but you will have to let us know about it as early as possible. Any other accommodation arrangement other than the standard ones will cost you extra.

Your meal options are pancakes, toast, eggs, beans, Tibetan bread, etc., for breakfast. Meanwhile, Dal Bhat, noodles, spaghetti, pasta, pizza, etc., are your lunch and dinner options. Additionally, there are a lot of traditional dishes that you can try throughout the trek.

Transportation

The Gokyo Lakes Trek 12 Days itinerary requires us to fly out to Lukla at the start of the trek and fly back to Kathmandu to end the trek. In addition to that, this trek package will cover airport pick-ups and drop-offs.

Permit

For this trek, you just need to have the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit. Both of these permits are a part of the standard Gokyo Lakes Trek 12 Days itinerary, meaning the expenses related to these permits will be covered by the trek package.

Trip preparation and fitness

To prepare for this moderately difficult trek, we recommend that trekkers start their physical preparation at least 8 to 10 weeks before the scheduled start of the trek. Your physical preparation should focus on building your stamina and strengthening your leg muscles in general. Other than that, you do not have to focus on any other body part.

Cost & Budget

This Gokyo Lakes Trek 12 Days package will cost you USD 1300. This price will cover your daily costs such as meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) during trek days, accommodation, permit fees, local taxes at remote villages, breakfasts in Kathmandu, flight to and from Lukla, ground transportation as per the itinerary, and more.

Gadgets charging & Internet

The Everest region is the best-facilitated Himalayan trekking region in Nepal since it is the most popular one. Since most of our itinerary follows the route of the standard EBC trek, we will have no issues charging our devices. However, some of the eateries might charge you a couple of dollars to have your gadgets charged.

Similarly, you will find internet connections in most of the villages we will spend the night at. However, they are not very stable or reliable, so we recommend that trekkers get the Everest internet card. Also, if you are planning to use roaming data services in Kathmandu, you must know that e-sim users will be charged more, while ejectable SIM cards will be charged much less.

Your Extra expenses

The extra expenses you have to pay for separately include personal travel insurance or medical insurance, emergency evacuation services, hot showers, WiFi, gadget charging, extra meals, additional accommodation, etc.

Things to Remember Before Trekking Gokyo Lakes Trek 12 Days

  • Keep yourself hydrated throughout the trek to avoid any altitude-related complications. You should drink 3 to 4 liters of water everyday.
  • Make sure that you have packed multi-layered clothing, a base moisture-wicking layer, a thermal layer, an insulating layer, a down jacket, and a weather-proof outer.
  • Do not forget shades, sun screen, beanies, lip guard, and warm gloves and socks.
  • The tea houses are there to offer the basic living facilities; do not expect anything fancy from them since transporting goods to those remote locations is a hassle.
  • Be mindful of the local customs, do not wear revealing clothes, and always ask permission if you are going to take pictures of the locals.

Add-Ons

Upgrade Your Accommodation in Kathmandu

The standard Gokyo Lakes Trek 12 Days package offers a stay at 3-star hotels during your time in Kathmandu. This arrangement is very serviceable and offers a great deal of comfort. However, we understand that you might want a bit of luxury before you start a journey to the remote Everest highlands. This is why we offer the option of upgrades.

We will book your rooms at your preferred 4-star or 5-star hotels at a price. This upgrade is not inclusive of the standard trek package and will be treated as an additional expense, which will be billed separately.

Private Helicopter flight to and from Lukla

The only issue with standard flights to and from Lukla is that they are limited to morning flights. This might not be a huge issue, but it gets in the way if you want to fly to Lukla at some other time. A private helicopter ride is not limited to morning flights, as it is not affected by the swift winds of the hills. In addition to that, helicopter seats are more spacious, and the wide windows offer a wide view of the hills and peaks. Similar to upgraded accommodation, this helicopter ride is an additional expense.

Frequently Asked Question (FAQ’s)

In terms of difficulty, both treks are on the same level. The EBC trek offers a journey to the base camp of Everest with a great view from Kala Patthar, while the Gokyo Lake trek takes us to Gokyo Ri, which is the highest point and the main viewpoint of this trek.

Yes, we can combine the Everest Base Camp itinerary with the Gokyo Lakes Trek itinerary, creating a much more difficult trekking itinerary. On a scale of 10, this trek would be an 8.5 easily.

Our expert guides will make sure to check your oxygen level before bed and before breakfast, since altitude sickness occurs when you are asleep. This will help the guide to see any early signs of altitude sickness.

The WiFi provided by the tea houses is not very stable, but the internet connection from an Everest internet card will surely do the job.
