Essential Information of Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes Trek

isoro

The Gokyo Lake Trek with Everest Base Camp is a combination of the standard EBC trek and the Gokyo Lake trek, both of which have their own sets of difficulties. If we had to rate this trek, the figure would be 8.5 out of 10 given the steep climbs and sheer drops at certain points during the trek. One of the toughest points of the trek is the climb to Cho La Pass which has developed to be a rite of passage for trekkers.

The high elevation of the highlands also makes it difficult as we have to make sure not to get altitude sickness at any point.

Awọn akoko ti o dara julọ

The best seasons for the Gokyo Lake Trek with Everest Base Camp are Autumn (September to November) and Spring (March to May). However, if you are unable to make it to Nepal during these months, you can also do this trek in the summer season (June to August) but summer is also more prone to rainfall which can block the amazing views during your trek.

During the break of autumn, the scenes are more vivid and clear in Nepal as the weather clears. This is the best time to take in the scenes of the Nepalese highlands in its prime.

Arun giga

Altitude sickness is a real challenge in any highland setting, not only in Nepal. Basically, any place over the 5000-meter mark is considered home to altitude sickness but it can be prevented easily if you follow the tips the guide recommends. In general, make sure that you are well-hydrated every day of the Gokyo Lake Trek with Everest Base Camp, and also make sure that you report any signs of altitude sickness to the guide.

Altitude sickness can show some light signs starting from 3500 meters altitude but at such low altitude, the effects are trivial. However, things take a turn once you reach 5000 meters, the same condition at such altitude can turn fatal if not given proper care.

As for food, your breakfast options are Toast or Tibetan bread, french toast, baked beans
Different types of sandwiches, different types of toast (honey, jam, etc.), boiled or fried egg and cheese, porridge, pancakes, hashbrowns, etc. Your lunch and dinner options are Nepalese Dal Bhat, Noodles, momo, pasta and macarons, pizza, spring rolls, spaghetti, burgers, etc. Remember that not every accommodation has these items; as you get to a higher altitude, food options lessen and are limited to what’s locally available.

Preparing for the Gokyo Lake Trek with Everest Base Camp takes a lot of time as this trek itself is a lengthy one. We recommend you work out for at least 10-12 weeks prior to your visit to Nepal. The optimal approach to prepare for any highland trek is to go on hikes in small hills or slanted roads. This helps train your glutes and calf muscles which can make your time in the Himalayas much easier.

If you are someone who’s physically active, you can trim down the preparation time to 8-6 weeks. Remember that the key to preparing yourself for the Himalayas is to train your leg muscles and increase your stamina both of which are very important for the long days of trekking.

The Gokyo Lakes Trek in itself is a challenging venture that is rated as a strenuous trek. The itinerary for the Gokyo Lake Trek shares the same path as the standard Everest Base Camp trek for only a couple of days, before deviating north. Combining the Gokyo Lake Trek with the EBC trek is a logical addition as they are nearby destinations that can be visited in a single visit.

Unlike the standard Gokyo Lake Trek, the Everest Base Camp Trek is relatively easy. The EBC trek is rated as moderate and rightfully so.

The most difficult part of this trek is the Cho La Pass section where you have to trek steep trail covered in snow and peebles which makes it loose and slippery. Microspikes are highly recommended for this section.

From Gokyo Ri, the viewpoint of the Gokyo region, you can get a stunning panoramic view of the Everest along with Ama Dablam, Makalu, Lhotse, Pumori, Cho Oyu, etc. You will also be able to see most of the Gokyo region lakes from this viewpoint.

Not every accommodation provide extra facilities so be ready to live a minimal life for a couple of nights.
